“Sharing Almonds”

5The morning was like all mornings in that season. The sun had risen fast and bright and was shedding fresh light on the valley.

But the sun would be no match for the darkness to come.

The growth of the valley had turned green. The soil there had been turned and turned by the calloused, sunbaked hands of the Hazara for centuries. The almond farming would have been good that year. The almonds would have been sweet and flavorful, sold and shipped throughout the country as they had been for ages.
